Discover Malta: History, Beaches and Local Cuisine

Malta is a captivating destination with a rich history and diverse attractions. Located in the Mediterranean Sea, this island country boasts stunning landscapes, ancient architecture, and a vibrant cultural scene. Visitors can explore the historic capital city of Valletta, with its impressive fortifications and grand cathedrals, or relax on the beautiful beaches of Gozo. Malta’s history is reflected in its UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as the megalithic Ġgantija temples, which are older than the Egyptian pyramids. The cuisine in Malta is a delightful blend of Mediterranean flavours, influenced by its history of being ruled by various empires. Whether you’re interested in history, outdoor adventures, or simply soaking up the sun, Malta offers a little something for everyone.

It’s no wonder that people, like myself, have been returning to the island for many years. In all honesty, I’ve lost count of the amount of times I have visited Malta and instead see it as a second home. The plus side is that I’ve done so much exploring over the years that I feel confident in sharing some amazing things to do when you visit. So without further ado, here are some great things to do in Malta:

  1. Explore Valletta: Wander through the charming streets of Valletta, Malta’s capital city, and visit its historic sites such as St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the Grandmaster’s Palace.
  2. Visit Mdina: Discover the “Silent City” of Mdina, a medieval walled town with narrow streets, stunning architecture, and panoramic views. The dungeons here are a good place to visit for a rich piece of the past.
  3. Enjoy the Beaches: Relax and sunbathe on the beautiful beaches of Malta, such as Golden Bay, Mellieha Bay, and Ramla Bay.
  4. Discover the Blue Grotto: Take a boat trip to the Blue Grotto sea caves and admire the mesmerizing blue waters and natural rock formations. It really is such a picturesque place.
  5. Explore Gozo: Take a ferry to the nearby island of Gozo and visit the impressive Ġgantija Temples, as well as the picturesque villages and stunning coastline.
  6. Dive into History: Explore the ancient history of Malta at sites like Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Temples, and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hypogeum of Ħal-Saflieni.
  7. Experience Maltese Cuisine: Indulge in the local cuisine, including delicious pastries, fresh seafood, and traditional dishes like rabbit stew and pastizzi.
  8. Relax in Dingli Cliffs: Enjoy breathtaking views from Dingli Cliffs, the highest point in Malta, and take a peaceful walk along the coastal paths.
  9. Attend Festivals: If you’re visiting during the summer, don’t miss the lively village festivals and cultural events that showcase Maltese traditions and music. Their firework displays alone are one not to miss.
  10. Water Sports and Activities: Engage in water sports such as snorkeling, diving, and sailing, or explore the island’s rugged landscapes through hiking and cycling.

With its blend of history, natural beauty, and Mediterranean charm, Malta offers a wide range of experiences for visitors to enjoy. As the center point for a large part of the second world war, there are plenty of things to see and do around the subject. However, I’m going to save that for an upcoming post because I know that is not for everyone. I’d love to know what your favourite thing about Malta is o if it is on your bucket list in the comments below.

  1. This was an interesting post! What stood out to me was that you mention Malta is like a second home to you. I live in the United States, and the States is great, but I know some people who busted other places and loved it at those other places so much that they moved permanently to the other country. I don’t travel much so all I know is the United States, but one place I would to visit is Costa Rica! It would be great to learn Spanish there and o hear healthcare is very good there! Also, Costa Rica is home to a Blie Zone! A blue zone is a place where people tend to live long and healthy lives! Thankyou for this post! If I get to do some traveling I might put Malta on my list!
