Ah, the one-year-old stage. It’s a beautiful mix of baby cuteness and toddler chaos—where you’re still technically in the “baby” phase, but your little one is beginning to assert their independence in all kinds of ways. They can’t talk much yet, but somehow, they can still communicate their opinions LOUDLY.

If you’re raising a one-year-old, you’ll totally relate to these ridiculously true moments. And if you’re not yet there… buckle up.
Silence Means Trouble
When your one-year-old is quiet, brace yourself. The silence is usually followed by the sound of something being thrown, the unmistakable sound of something being unrolled (hello, toilet paper), or the sudden discovery of how to open a drawer and empty the contents onto the floor.
You Will Be Constantly Watched
Gone are the days of “me time.” The moment you stand up, your one-year-old is in hot pursuit. Whether it’s the kitchen, the bathroom, or just a few feet away in the living room, they will follow you like a tiny shadow. Forget personal space.
You’ll Be 99% Sure They’re Going to Break Something
Everything is new to them, and everything is a toy. Your phone, your glasses, the remote control – definitely meant for them, right? The constant fear of watching them grab, drop, or accidentally launch something across the room is very real. Every object in your home now has the potential to become a projectile.
The “No” Phase Is Real (But They Can’t Say It Yet)
Your one-year-old can’t speak much, but they can definitely say “no” – through their actions.
– Nope, they will not eat that spoonful of food.
– Nope, they will not go to sleep.
– Nope, they will not wear that hat.
It’s a silent protest, but the tantrums that follow are loud and clear.
Everything Goes in Their Mouth
If it’s small enough (or even large enough), it’s fair game. Toys, shoes, your socks, the dog’s tail… they’ll try to eat it all. You could have just cleaned the floor, but they’ll find that one speck of dust or mystery object that you didn’t see.
You Will Become a Human Jungle Gym
Who needs a play structure when you have mum or dad? At any given moment, your one-year-old will treat your body like a climbing wall – pulling on your arms, crawling over your legs, or using your face as a launch pad. Oh, and don’t forget about the face-smacking phase. They’ll discover their hands are great for exploration – especially when it comes to your face.
They’ll Know What They Want… Even If You Don’t
It’s funny how, suddenly, they’re so certain about what they want. They can’t speak yet, but they know that they prefer the red spoon over the blue one. They can point to the toy they want, and if you don’t give it to them immediately, expect some serious disappointment – and perhaps a tantrum of Olympic proportions.
Sleep Is a Myth
Remember when you used to sleep for more than three hours at a time? That was a nice dream. Your one-year-old is now in charge of your sleep schedule, and they will decide when you get up (which, spoiler alert, is not when you want). Also, good luck with naps – because if they’re not in the right mood or position, it’s game over.
They Are Expert Mess Creators
You’ve never seen a mess until you’ve seen a one-year-old with a snack. They’ll take a single cracker and turn it into breadcrumbs that somehow spread across the room. You’ve cleaned the high chair and the floor five times, but by the end of the meal, you’re living in a snack wasteland. It’s like a natural disaster, but with yogurt and Cheerios.
Your Heart Will Explode at Least 100 Times a Day
Even though they can’t say much, your one-year-old knows how to make your heart melt. Their little giggles, their clumsy attempts at standing, and their big-eyed wonder at the world around them will make every moment worth it. Even on the hardest days, a tiny hug or their first little wave will make you forget the chaos – and leave you absolutely in love with the adventure that is parenting.

Such a true list! I feel like we’re way passed this stage now, so it’s been funny having a little reminder of their mannerisms. Haha. The no phase is so real! Although tbf we’re still in that with our 3yo now. Eeek!

These are some great reminders for anyone who is a parent of a young child, and very encouraging! I think it’s good for parents to know they are not alone in many ways!

I found myself nodding and agreeing with absolutely everything you said here. From the sleep deprivation, to getting worried about when my little one went quite…. you know she’s doing something she shouldn’t – to the cute little moments to make you forget that you’re tired, and it’s all worth it. What a great post. Loved it! 🙂
