If you’ve already read my popular post, Discover Malta: History, Beaches and Local Cuisine, you’re probably wondering what else this sun-kissed Mediterranean archipelago has to offer. Enter Gozo- Malta’s smaller, greener, and more laid-back sister island. Packed with ancient history, stunning beaches, and crystal-clear waters, Gozo is the perfect day trip or weekend getaway. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or culture, there are plenty of unforgettable things to do in Gozo.

How to Get to Gozo from Malta
Getting to Gozo is incredibly easy. The Gozo Channel ferry departs regularly from Cirkewwa Harbour in northern Malta and takes about 25 minutes to reach Mgarr Harbour in Gozo. Ferries run frequently throughout the day and can accommodate both foot passengers and vehicles, making it super convenient whether you’re planning a quick trip or bringing your own car to explore.
Things to do in Gozo
Step Back in Time at the Citadel in Victoria
No visit to Gozo is complete without exploring the Citadel (Cittadella) in Victoria – the island’s capital. This historic fortified city sits atop a hill and offers panoramic views of the entire island. Wander the narrow medieval streets, visit the Gozo Cathedral, and drive into local history at the Gozo Museum of Archaeology. The Citadel is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the top cultural attractions in Gozo.
Relax on the Red Sands of Ramla Bay
Ramla Bay, located in the north of the island, is famous for its unique reddish-golden sand. This is one of the best beaches in Gozo and ideal for swimming, sunbathing, or just unwinding. Surrounded by lush countryside and home to Calypso’s Cave (linked to Homer’s Odyssey), Ramla Bay is a scenic spot that combines natural beauty with mythology.
Explore the Ggantiji Temples – Older than the Pyramids
Gozo is home to some of the world’s oldest freestanding structures – the Ggantija Temples in Xaghra. These Neolithic temples date back over 5,500 years and are even older than Egypt’s pyramids. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, they offer a fascinating glimpse into the prehistoric civilisations of Malta. A must-see for history lovers and one of the top archaeological sites in Gozo.
Discover the Azure Window Site and Inland Sea
Although the famous Azure Window collapsed in 2017, the site near Dwejra Bay is still well worth visiting. The natural beauty of the area remains breath-taking, with the Inland Sea, Fungus Rock, and Blue Hole offering plenty to explore. It’s a prime location for photography, hiking, or simply enjoying coastal views. This is also a popular diving site in Gozo due to its underwater arches and marine life.
Dive and Snorkel in Gozo’s Crystal Clear Waters
Gozo is considered one of the top diving destinations in the Mediterranean. With clear visibility, underwater caves, wrecks, and rich marine biodiversity, it’s a paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers alike. Top dive sites include the Blue Hole, Reqqa Point, and Xatt L-Ahmar. Even beginners can enjoy the underwater world with local diving schools offering guided experiences.
Enjoy Seaside Charm at Xlendi Bay
Located on the southwest coast, Xlendi Bay is a picturesque fishing village turned tourist hotspot. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, it’s perfect for sunset views, seafood dining, swimming, or even a gentle paddle in a kayak. The scenic promenade and laid-back vibe make Xlendi ideal for couples, families, or solo travellers looking for a relaxing day by the sea.
Visit Ta-Pinu Basilica
One of the most iconic landmarks in Gozo, the Basilica of Ta’Pinu is a peaceful sanctuary surrounded by countryside. Known for it’s miraculous origins and intricate architecture, it’s a popular pilgrimage site and offers tranquil spiritual experience, regardless of your beliefs. Don’t miss the stunning mosaics and panoramic views from the surrounding area.
Take a Walk Along the Salt Pans of Marsalforn
Just outside Marsalforn, you’ll find an intriguing stretch of coastline lined with centuries-old salt pans. Locals have been harvesting sea salt here for generations. The landscape is unique, photogenic, and peaceful – perfect for a coastal walk, especially at sunset. It’s also a great spot for travel photography in Gozo.
Sample Local Food, Wine and Pastry Treats
No trip to Gozo is complete without indulging in traditional Gozitan cuisine. Try Ftira (local flatbread), Gbejniet (sheep cheeselets), and fresh seafood at a village restaurant or seaside café. You can also visit Ta’Mena Estate for wine tasting and locally produced goods like olive oil, jams, and liqueurs.
A must-do? Find a traditional bakery – Gozo is known for its delicious pastry treats, from flaky Qassatat filled with ricotta or peas, to sweet Imqaret (date-filled pastries). These homemade specialities are packed with flavour and offer a true taste of the island’s culinary heritage.
Kayak or Paddleboard Around Comino’s Blue Lagoon
While technically located between Malta and Gozo, Comino’s Blue Lagoon is easily reached from Gozo via boat tour or kayak. The lagoon’s turquoise waters are world-famous and ideal for paddle boarding, snorkelling, or just lounging on a boat. Combine this with your Gozo trip for the ultimate island-hopping experience.
Final Thoughts: Why Gozo Should Be on Your Travel List
Gozo offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, ancient history, and coastal charm. Whether you’re exploring temples older than the pyramids, lounging on red-sand beaches, or diving into the deep blue sea, there’s something for everyone on this tranquil island. And with easy access from Malta by ferry, there’s no excuse not to include Gozo in your Mediterranean adventure.
