5 Things You Need To Clean Today

AD – Items in the post have been gifted to me in exchange for being featured in my 5 things you need to clean today post. This does not affect any opinions stated within the post.

For many people, the arrival of Covid-19 has made them think more carefully about so many things. One of those things in what and how often objects are cleaned. Right at the beginning of this pandemic, we were told to clean door handles and letterboxes more regularly. Touch point cleaning in shops and other public places has also become so much better. Having worked in retail as well as been a cleaner, I can say that they definitely needed a more thorough clean.

I thought I would share with you 5 things that you should be cleaning regularly but that sometimes get forgotten. As you read any of the points I mention and realise that you haven’t cleaned it in a while, I hope you will do so once you’ve finished reading.

Hairbrushes

We use them everyday and yet when was the last time you have cleaned them? I know I have been guilty of this in the past too. Depending on what type of brush you own, depends on how you clean it. I have a tangle teaser which I find really easy to clean with just soap and water.

TV Remote

These can get grimy so quickly. We are touching remotes more now than ever before, with many of us being home most of the time. This means that you should be stepping up the cleaning. How many times have you eaten something like crisps for example and then you turn the channel over or change the volume. You probably do it more than you even realised.

Mattress

This is one that a lot of people have admitted to not cleaning. Just because you have a sheet on your mattress, it doesn’t mean it will be clean. Over time, things will seep through and go onto the mattress. Whether its that cuppa you split whilst in bed or perhaps you’ve dribbled in your sleep without realising. You can hire mattress cleaners that work much in the same way as a carpet cleaner to do the hard work for you. Sprinkle some bicarb over the mattress before hoovering up which will neutralise any odours too.

Phone

We use our phones countless times a day. They can harbour so many germs and can become dirty over time too. When you think that you are then placing that same phone by your face when you make a call, its a horrible thought. That is where Smart Screen comes in.

Smart Screen is an antibacterial microfibre smartphone cloth that comes complete with its own pouch. It has antibacterial Silver Ion agent introduced into the weave process, leaving it effective for up to 15 washes. You can pick up your very own Smart Screen in a variety of colours for just £9.95.

Purse/Wallet

A purses get so much use, constantly being taken in and out of our bags. They can be riddled with germs but with a simple wipe down with disinfectant regularly, you can keep those germs in check.

I hope you have found these suggestions useful. Is there any others that you would add to the list?

Don’t forget to check out the Smart Screen website.

  1. I agree a lot of these seem to fly under the radar… I guess other items like keys that also get touched a lot need a clean. My mattress is pretty new so hopefully isn’t too bad!

  2. It is grim to think about everythign you touch and then don’t clean isn’t it? I try to do the mattress every few months with bicarb…think it is due again soon! I think working in healthcare definitley makes you think about everything that needs to be cleaned…I try to do my phone everyday!

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Oh my goodness, I’m not sure I wanted to think about some of the things around me now that need a clean… especially my hairbrush. Make up brushes are the ones I’m pretty bad at remembering as well. Thanks for this – I needed the reminder for sure!

  4. We have a mattress protector which we can wash from time to time but I was actually quite shocked by your comment on the phones – of course, it makes perfect sense. Definitely a great reminder, so thank you, Kelly!

  5. It’s so important to clean your phone- and I never even thought of cleaning your TV remote but of course everyone uses it and so it’s not the most sanitary! I regularly wash my make-up brushes (for my skincare) but I never thought of my hair brush, thank you x

  6. My phone on its own could probably cure some illness with the amount of crap that is on it!! I have got pretty good at cleaning the things we forget about though. Covid has certainly changed our mindset around cleanliness and hygiene x

  7. I wash my hands the second I walk in from any errands, and wipe down my bag and keys, the car steering wheel and door handles. That way I’m not bringing in any bacteria…or hopefully less of it!
I like to go around the house with my spray and wipe down all the door handles, remote, banister, and am always horrified at how smudgy everything gets, even after a few days. I throw the hairbrushes and my makeup brushes in soapy water every month. Thanks so much for this great reminder!

  8. This is a great reminder of all things I don’t clean! Hair brushes in first place, i never think about it but now that I read it it makes sense as well as cleaning my phone! Thanks for the reminder Kelly x

  9. I need to clean all of these things! Lol I’m bad at cleaning my mattress and my phone but at least wipe my phone with a wipe when I’m out

  10. I never thought about cleaning my hairbrush, I take it in the shower me with every time I wash my hair so I suppose it gets a good clean in there. I now make more of an effort to wipe down my phone, especially when I’ve been out in public!

  11. I needed these reminders! I can’t remember the last time I cleaned my combs and that’s so not a good thing. I feel like I never know what to use to clean my phone too, so thank you for the suggestion!

  12. Love this! I actually just cleaned my hairbrush the other day, but that is the first time I’ve ever done that. I will check out Smart Screen 🙂 xx

  13. Yes! I try to remember to clean my phone frequently (although sometimes I fall short). We have a mattress cover on the mattress that we can pull off and clean each time that we change the bedding. It’s waterproof and everything too, so not allowing anything in (we allow pets in our bed, so it was the safest choice lol). That being said – confession, I can’t remember the last time I cleaned my remote. Another one that I know I should clean more often is my computer keyboard and mouse…

  14. I can honestly say that I don’t often think to wash my purse or TV remote. I should definitely clean my computer mouse and keyboard too, especially my ones in the office that other people use! Thank you for sharing this list.

  15. Great post! Just what I needed, I clean my phone quite regularly. But I need to start wiping my remote and mattress more. Thanks for the tips!

  16. I really need to get my life together and clean out my purse and wallet! Some of these I’ve never even thought about before so thank you for sharing!!

  17. You know when you think about it, the amount of times you use these stuff in your house, and yet for days never give it a thought to cleaning them. It should be daily! Great post to open ones eyes!

  18. This is a very good reminder about everyday objects that need to be cleaned regularly but that we forget or rarely clean. I admit that all the items on your list are things that I don’t clean often enough. This post is very helpful. Thank you.
