One of the things I love most about where I live is that there are so many beautiful country walks nearby. A particular favourite of mine is Exmoor. Not only is it famous for its wild deer and ponies, it also has a stunning mix of dramatic coastline and rugged heather moorland. Everywhere you look there is a beautiful view to be seen.

Why is Exmoor so special?

It’s a unique landscape of moorland, woodland, valleys and farmland, shaped by people and nature over thousands of years. It’s one of 15 UK National Parks.

With so much to see and do, you can spend the whole day exploring Exmoor. It’s important that you take some essentials with you, so I thought I’d put together a list of what essentials I would include. Here is 10 essentials for a walk on Exmoor:

Sensible & Comfortable Footwear

Exmoor is all about walking. There are hundreds of spots where you can park up and just go for a walk. The scenery is breath-taking at times and so you might want to walk away from the road slightly to enjoy this. Sensible and comfortable footwear is a must when it comes to walking on Exmoor. It’s a very rugged landscape, which animals have made their home, so don’t be surprised to find rabbit warrens and wild animal dens dotted around.

Weather Appropriate Clothing

You are very much out in the open when on Exmoor. If its cold, you will feel it so definitely wrap up warm. If its hot, make sure you have sunglasses, a hat etc to protect you from the sun. A pack-a-mac is ideal all year round because you can wear it in winter and use it to sit on in the summer.

Suncream

Sticking with the weather, sun cream is a must. Even in the middle of winter, the sun has been strong enough that you can still get burnt. It’s important to protect yourself because there is little shelter to be found on Exmoor.

Map

You might think a map is old school, however it’s essential on Exmoor because phone signal is very poor. Having a map of the local area will be a blessing for getting you back to the main roads. This is even more important if you aren’t local to the area.

Cash

Whilst so many of us no longer carry cash around since the pandemic, it’s always worth bringing some with you on Exmoor. You might want to stop off at a local shop or one of the many country pubs dotted around. As mentioned above, phone signal is poor on Exmoor and some places are just unable to take card payments.

What3Words App

This app is a godsend. I have used it countless times for various different reasons, although thankfully, never in an emergency. However, being prepared is key, especially somewhere as remote as Exmoor. Download the What3Words app before you travel just in case. This app can be a lifesaver in an emergency.

Camera

For me, a camera is essential. Whether that is a professional one or just the camera on your phone, you will want to take some photos of the beautiful scenery and amazing wildlife. If you are using your phone, just remember to ensure there is enough battery left for emergencies.

First Aid Kit

Obviously you don’t have to take loads of items, however plasters, antiseptic wipes and maybe a couple of other items are always worth taking. Even with the best footwear, I’ve still ended up with blisters so I always make sure I have some handy.

Food & Plenty Of Drink

Exmoor is a lovely place to have a picnic, although please always remember to take your rubbish home with you. Taking some food with you means you can enjoy being in the outdoors even more. It’s always important on any walk to make sure you have plenty of water. I always keep a two litre bottle of water in the car so that I can top my own drinks bottle up when I need to.

A Good Backpack

Lastly, to house all of your essentials, you need a good sized backpack. You want something that will fit everything in without being to big and uncomfortable. I have fallen in love with this Salt & Hide Sonny Tarpa Backpack from Trendhim.
