*My Top 5 Places I’ve Visited So Far is a guest post. For more guest post opportunities, check out my requirements.
During my 26 years on this earth, I have been extremely fortunate to visit a huge range of countries. All through my childhood my parents took us on family holidays abroad. Although a lot of time was spent relaxing – which is my favourite thing to do on holiday – we went on plenty of day trips around each country to experience their cultures and see some sights.
Into my adult life I’ve continued to travel, although not as much as I would have liked, to a fair few countries with my family and my partner. I’ve even gone by myself on one occasion! After a lot of thought, I’ve managed to whittle down my top 5 places I’ve visited so far:
Number 1 on my list is Sri Lanka. I travelled there on my own back in 2015 for 3 weeks to volunteer at a turtle rescue and rehabilitation centre. On the weekends a group of us would take the opportunity to travel around the country and see the sights. There are some beautiful places to see in Sri Lanka, such as The Temple of The Tooth in Kandy and Yala National Park where you can take a jeep safari. If you’re up to the challenge, the Sigiriya Lion Rock is a must! The climb is a bit intense, some of it being a metal staircase attached to the side of a rock, but the views from the top are incredible. There are ruins on top that are great to see too, and you can go up at your own pace. Nearby are the Dambulla Cave Temples which are an eyeopener too! If you’re into wildlife there are plenty of elephant orphanages and rehabilitation centres you can visit – just make sure you do your research to support the legitimate ones.
During university I had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica for a research project. We decided to make it into a family holiday, so I stayed at the hotel with my family for a week and then went out to the project site for the other week. The project was based on Howler Monkey behaviour so I stayed within Santa Rosa National Park, Guanacaste. This park protects a large expanse of dry forest and is home to deer, monkeys (Howler, Capuchin & Spider), tapirs and wild cats. A lot of it is open to the public and is definitely worth visiting to see some wildlife. If you’re into wildlife and/or hiking, some other places worth a visit in the Guanacaste region are Palo Verde National Park and Rincon de la Vieja National Park. Costa Rica is truly such a beautiful country to visit.
My absolute favourite place to go on holiday is Portinatx. It’s a really lovely, family friendly town in Ibiza – lovely and quiet with minimal nightlife! Don’t get me wrong, there are some lovely cocktail bars, pubs and restaurants, but absolutely zero clubs, which is what I love. The beaches there are beautiful and it really is the best place to go if you want a relaxing, sunny holiday.
As much as I love Ibiza, I am a sucker for Greece. Any Greek island will do, but I recently discovered Crete and I fell in love. Greece for me is heaven. I’d love to do a Donna and move there in a full Mamma Mia moment. I stayed in the Heraklion region which I really loved. The beach there was absolutely stunning and even though we went right at the end of the holiday season, we had beautiful weather throughout. If you’re into history and architecture then the Minoan Palace in Knossos is a must see. Tui does a great excursion to the palace along with some other stops and you get a full guided tour which I’d say you’d need, otherwise you’re kind of just looking at some walls and not knowing anything about it. I love a Greek island and I’m just dying to get back there soon.
If you’re a city break kind of person, Amsterdam is a must. It is a fab place to visit and has everything you need, from museums to parks, zoos to historic buildings. And of course I can’t miss out the famous Red Light District. I wrote a Mini Guide to Amsterdam over on my blog that highlights some of the things to do, so I won’t go into too much depth here. It is a beautiful city to visit and the canal system that runs through it makes it that extra bit special.
I hope you enjoyed this whistle stop tour of my favourite places that I’ve visited. Have you been to any of these places? What would be on your top 5 list?
Until next time
