Having a love for fashion often leads people to creating their own clothing. Many people do this in the comfort of their own homes, and their pieces go no further than friends’ wardrobes. However, if you’d like to sell fashion and make a career out of doing so, you’re going to need to test the waters and see what people will be willing to buy.
After all, fashion is a very subjective thing, and many would-be fashion designers have come and gone without making a penny! But there are ways to find out what will sell and what’s more likely to sit in the warehouse; here are a few methods you should know about.

Think About What You Like
Having your own fashion line is all about bringing your own ideas to life. That’s all fashion has ever really been; if you want to wear something, making it yourself is often the best way to get the exact look you want.
So, what kind of designs would you really like to put together? For example, you might be the kind of person who loves myths, monsters, and anything to do with cryptids. If so, it’s time to make some doodles, download photoshop, and frame them up on a shirt to see how things fit together!
The more true you are to your own tastes, the more likely you are to find the right audience who share them. You need designs, first and foremost, but once that’s done, it’s time to get your designs out there in front of said audience and see what they think.
Set Up a Test Shoot
You can do this by hiring a friend who knows how to capture the image just right, buy some pieces from a wholesale clothing supplier, and then screenprint, embroider, or simply transfer your designs onto the fabric. Once all that’s out of the way, either model the clothes yourself or get another friend to pose with your designs on.
Holding a test shoot like this will help you see your fashion vision come to life. You’ll see your pieces in action, be able to evaluate how well they stand out when on a real human body, and you’ll finish up with a load of images you can share with anyone with an opinion you value.
Take Note of Trends
They come and go, of course, but they also indicate what people really want from the fashion world as is. Take note of trends for this purpose; what are the trends actually telling you about the people buying clothing right now?
For example, the current trend of buying and/or recreating Y2K styles could be showing us that nostalgia is what people value at the moment. You could tap into this with your own designs. Be sure to also take note of how the shape, length, and material of clothing has changed over the past decade too.
Understanding the fashion mindset could make selling fashion your bag!
