Simple, realistic changes for a more sustainable home this Earth Day

Real-Life Sustainability That Actually Sticks
If you’ve ever tried to make your home more eco-friendly and ended up giving up a week later… you’re definitely not alone.
As a mum, I don’t have time for complicated systems or swaps that make life harder. If anything, I need things to be:
- quick
- simple
- easy to stick to
That’s why I’ve learned to focus on small, realistic changes instead of trying to do everything at once.
With today being Earth Day, it’s the perfect reminder that even the smallest habits — the ones we do every single day — can have a real impact over time.
And one place that often gets overlooked?
The bathroom.
Why Your Bathroom Habits Matter More Than You Think
We don’t always think about it, but so many of our daily essentials come with a hidden environmental cost.
Things like:
- floss picks
- interdental brushes
- toothbrushes
- packaging
They’re small, used quickly, and often made from plastic.
In the UK, millions of these items end up in landfill every year — and because they’re so small, they’re easy to overlook when trying to reduce waste.
But the good news?
They’re also some of the easiest swaps to make.
Eco-Friendly Swaps That Are Actually Worth It
1. Switching to Plant-Based Oral Care (An Easy Win)
This is one of the simplest swaps I’ve made because it doesn’t require changing your routine at all — just what you’re using.
I’ve used DenTek products for a while now, so switching to their eco range felt like a really natural step rather than a big change.
What I like is that they’ve kept everything you actually need from your oral care, just made with more sustainable materials.
What I’ve been using:
These are ideal if you’ve got sensitive gums (which I definitely do some days). The soft, silky ribbon feels gentle but still properly cleans between teeth.
They’ve also got:
- a curved pick to help massage gums
- a tongue cleaner on the handle (which I didn’t realise I’d use as much as I do)
- fluoride-coated floss to help protect against decay
And the big difference?
The handle is made from a plant-based material derived from sugar cane, which helps reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional plastic.

These are great if you want that extra “fresh clean” feeling. They contain tiny micro-crystals designed to help remove stains between teeth — something a toothbrush alone just can’t do.
They’ve also got:
- a minty finish
- plaque removal + gum cleaning in one
- the same plant-based handle swap
It’s one of those small upgrades that makes your routine feel a bit more effective without adding extra steps.
Eco Slim Brushes & Easy Brushes
If you’ve got tighter gaps between teeth (or things like bridges or retainers), interdental brushes are a must.
The DenTek eco versions are:
- made with plant-based handles and castor plant bristles
- designed to reach those really awkward spots
- flexible so you can actually angle them where you need
I’ve found these especially useful because they get to places a normal toothbrush just doesn’t — and again, it’s just a swap, not a whole new habit.
Why this swap is worth it:
✔ No change to your routine
✔ Same (if not better) results
✔ Uses renewable materials instead of traditional plastic
✔ Reduces carbon emissions by up to 80%
For me, this is exactly what a good eco swap should be — easy, effective, and something you’ll actually stick with.
2. Refillable Cleaning Products
Once you get into the habit of refilling instead of rebuying, it just makes sense.
✔ Less plastic
✔ Often more cost-effective over time
✔ No extra effort once it’s part of your routine
3. Washable Cotton Pads
Such a simple switch if you’re using cotton pads daily.
Just throw them in the wash and reuse — easy.
4. Soap Bars (A Staple That Just Works)
Soap bars have always been a staple for me anyway, so this is one of those swaps that never felt like a “swap” — just something that already works.
✔ Minimal packaging
✔ Long-lasting
✔ Simple and reliable
Eco Swaps That Sound Good… But Aren’t Always Worth It
Not everything marketed as “eco-friendly” actually works for real life.
1. Overcomplicated Systems
If it adds stress or extra steps, it’s not going to last — especially with a busy household.
2. Swapping Everything at Once
It’s tempting, but it’s not realistic. Start small. One swap at a time.
3. Products That Don’t Fit Your Routine
Even the most sustainable option isn’t helpful if you don’t use it.
A Real-Life Mum Perspective
I’m not aiming for a perfectly eco home. Some days it’s about getting through the day, keeping everyone fed, and remembering where I left my cuppa. So for me, eco-friendly swaps have to:
- fit into what I’m already doing
- not cost loads of extra time
- not feel like a chore
That’s why things like switching to more sustainable oral care work so well — because I’m already doing it every day anyway. It’s not about doing everything. It’s about doing what you can.

Why Small Changes Matter This Earth Day
It’s easy to think one small change won’t make much difference.
But when those small changes are done consistently — and by lots of people — they add up quickly.
That’s what Earth Day is really about:
- Not perfection
- Not pressure
- Just positive action
And sometimes, that action starts with something as simple as changing what’s in your bathroom cupboard.
Final Thoughts
Eco-friendly living doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You don’t need to:
- throw everything away
- spend loads of money
- completely change your lifestyle overnight
Instead:
✔ Start small
✔ Choose swaps that fit your life
✔ Focus on what you’ll actually stick to
Because those are the changes that truly make a difference — for your home, your routine, and the planet.

One response to “Eco-Friendly Swaps That Are Worth It (And Ones That Aren’t)”
We could all make an eco-friendly swap in our daily lives. I’m making more sustainable swaps with clothes and skincare as they have big impacts on the environment!
