How to style your window area

One of the best things about having your own home is being able to furnish and style it to your taste. Whether you want your home to look minimalist or “lived in”, its completely your choice. There are so many blog posts on the internet that talk about styling certain rooms. Posts such as making a living room cosy are great. However, there aren’t that many posts about how to make a certain area of a room look good.

Today I thought I’d share a few ideas on how you can style an area that is forgotten. Despite this, it is one area that can really make a difference to a room and that is your window.

Taking it back to basics

Firstly, you want to make sure the area is in good condition. Fill in an holes, make sure the paint is smooth and make sure you have a good window sill. There is no point in styling an area if it looks worn out already. If your sill needs replacing, look for something that is good quality, value for money and easy to clean.

Window sills are primarily used to cover the reveal at the bottom of the window. It ensures you don’t see any gaps. “Bullnosed” simply means that the front edge of the board is round rather than square. It’s a style that personally I prefer.

Now it’s time to style it

Once you are happy with the area, its time to get to work making it more aesthetically pleasing. The first thing you should decide on is whether you are going to have a blind or curtains. You may need to make holes for a blind fitting or curtain pole. Trust me, you don’t want to do this once you’ve started styling the area. There are various styles of blinds to choose from so I’d definitely do some research. If you’ve decided on curtains, you then need to decide if you want tie backs or not. Without realising it, it can drastically change the amount of space you have available to style.

Add the finishing touches

Once you have decided on all of the above, its then time to add other items. I’ve found that you need to play around with items a bit until you find something that works for you. There are two things I’d urge you to consider. Firstly, if you place tall items on the window sill, you run the risk of blocking out light. Secondly, some items, when placed by a window, will fade from sunlight over time. Things like photo frames and plants work really well, whilst some people like to add books too. You can even switch it up depending on the season. A pumpkin in the Autumn and an Easter egg in the spring both work well.

  1. I’m actually going through a refurbishment in my house right now and something I MUST change is the window sill! It’s marble, which is nice, but it’s black and I honestly can’t stand it :))
    I’ve been getting some gorgeous plants lately, I’ve repainted two walls and currently I am thinking of adding a pastel green wall… I’ve got the shade and everything, all I need now is time to do it!

  3. I prefer curtains over blinds. There’s something cozy about curtains and you can easily change them depending on the season or your mood. I also love little pot plants on window sills 🙂

  10. This is great advice! I have a couple windows in the front of my office that I’ve currently done nothing with at this point, but this is the push that I need to make it into something fun. The rest of my office is really shaping up into something great, so I need to make that area of the room match the aesthetic of everything else!

  15. This has just reminded me to tidy up and sort my windowsill. I accidentally pulled off some paint when I was wrapping something up with sellotape. Note to self, don’t put sellotape on the windowsill to hold whilst you wrap – bad idea. But your post has now told me ways to fix this and make it look better! Can’t wait to add a pumpkin for Autumn tho!

    • I used to have a small window area too and used to style in with miniature plants and trinkets. I think its just about getting the balance right and making sure enough light comes in.

  26. Lots of great stuff here! I’m in the process of decorating my new home, and it can get overwhelming at times, especially when it comes to small spaces like shelves and windows. I’m trying to find the right balance of decorative objects, but it can be difficult to find the right balance (and to keep items from blocking out the light!). Will definitely follow the guidelines here. Great post!

  27. My uncle used to hang crystals in his front room window. When the light hit them they reflected rainbows all over the room. As a kid, it was magical (his cats seemed to enjoy playing with them too).

  35. Thanks for the window sill tips. I have one window with a large enough sill (the kitchen box window) that I’ve decorated with plants and ceramics. It looks quite lovely, and I wish I had my window sills like it. Enjoy your weekend!

  40. Out upstairs window sills are very skinny so there’s no room for decorations on there but we have bays downstairs that are usually full of flowers and candles. And then I invade the space to take photos on it…x 😂
