I have been trying to make better choices to be more sustainable in my life for a while now. I knew it wasn’t going to be an overnight, easy process. It also wasn’t going to be a cheap one either. Just because something is a better option, it doesn’t mean it will be right for you. I found that out when it came to shampoo bars.

Having been a blogger for over ten years, I had a huge collection of beauty items to test out ready to review. I didn’t want to just throw them away and replace with eco options because that wouldn’t help matters. I did streamline my collection, giving things I knew I wouldn’t use to family or to charity. I’m slowly working my way through my collection now and I’m happy about the progress I’m making. It does mean that this area of my life isn’t quite ready to go fully sustainable just yet. I needed to turn my attentions to another part of my life. I chose the one thing that arrives like clockwork…

Let’s Talk Periods

Periods are something that we as women learn to cope with. I remember when mine first started, I thought I was going to die. I’d started when I was still in primary school and didn’t have a clue what was happening. For years, they were painful and just a horrible part of the month. It took me a long time to become comfortable with the fact that periods are just apart of life.

Pads just didn’t work for me, they either leaked or I felt too ashamed to change them at school. When I discovered tampons, it was a gamechanger. I could be active, go swimming and do so many things that I had felt unable to do before. I no longer felt trapped because of my period.

When I started to think more about the impact I was having on the environment, tampons were the first thing I knew was a big issue. After changing them multiple times a day during my period, the amount of plastic I was getting through was awful. I started researching different options available that were more sustainable.

Period pants just didn’t appeal to me. I didn’t want to have to stick them in my washing machine because I already do more than enough laundry as it is. I therefore opted for a menstrual cup. I’d heard a few horror stories but I thought I would give them a try. I will right a full blog post on my thoughts on menstrual cups in another post soon.

This was about the time that Lil-Lets got in touch. They had designed a reusable tampon applicator and wondered if I would like to try it. I felt like this was exactly what I had been looking for and jumped at the chance to try them. Don’t get me wrong, menstrual cups are a great idea. However, I travel a lot in our converted van and it doesn’t have the facilities where I could regularly empty and clean one.

My Thoughts

I’ve bee testing out this applicator for the past couple of months and am so happy with how its gone. Recently, I took it away with me on a camping trip and found it so easy and mess-free. I was worried about how I would clean it, but it was so easy with just some warm water and mild soap. I could then sterilise it when I got back home. This is definitely a gamechanger for me and has allowed me to stop worrying over my period when I’m travelling. I would definitely recommend that you give them a try for yourself.

  1. I’m the opposite and really struggled using tampons! Pads were better but still caused so much irritation. I finally tried period pants and I loved them but I do admit that the whole cleaning process and changing isn’t great. I’m glad you’ve found a reusable product that works for you!
